John Sheran admits he was surprised Peterhead turned to him to take over from Neale Cooper as they attempt to avoid relegation from Division Two.The former Montrose and Cove Rangers manager succeeds the ex-Aberdeen defender with the Blue Toon sitting two points adrift at the bottom.

"They have tended to go for some bigger names in the past, so it was a bit of a surprise," he said.

"There's eight games to go and we just have to concentrate on the next one."

Sheran and assistant Graeme Park watched from the stand as Peterhead drew with relegation rivals Stenhousemuir hours after Cooper's departure became official.

We'll be positive and go and play attacking football - that's what we like to do

"It feels great to be back," he said after two years out of football. "It has all been a bit of a whirlwind.

"When myself and Graeme were offered the job, there was only one answer and that was to take the job."

Peterhead, with senior player Bobby Mann in charge, fought back from two goals down to secure a draw and Sheran took heart from their second-half performance.

"We saw enough to tell us we can get out of trouble, but we need to get the players' belief levels up," he told Peterhead's website.

"I am hugely motivated by the challenge to try to improve the situation we are in and get us out of trouble.

"We'll be positive and go and play attacking football - that's what we like to do."
